Ride Victim Fights For Better Safety
Kaitlyn Lassiter
The teenage girl who had both feet severed on a Louisville amusement park ride last year is speaking out publicly for the first time.

Kaitlyn Lassiter and her family are in Washington, D.C., pushing for better ride safety. Lassiter, 14, had both of her feet severed on June 21 when a cable broke loose on the Superman Tower of Power ride, at Kentucky Kingdom. Doctors were able to re-attach one foot, but the other could not be saved.

On Wednesday, Lassiter and her family, along with Massachusetts congressman Edward Markey, spoke about a loophole in the law that prohibits the federal government from regulating the safety of rides located at amusement parks. It’s a loophole that Lassiter says should have been closed long ago.

“This accident has affected my life dramatically,” said Lassiter. “I won’t be the person I was before because now I’m scared of stuff. I fear for my life when I get in a car, I fear for my life when I get on an elevator. It’s hard for me to live my days like I used to.”

Lassiter, who still experiences some pain, says that the law should be changed so that nobody else has to go through an ordeal like hers.

“(The accident) took my legs being taken from me, which people take for granted every day, to have something changed,” she said. “And that’s sad.”

Lassiter and her family have filed a lawsuit against Kentucky Kingdom.

Kaitlyn is such a beautiful girl with or without feet. Things are hard for her right now and they will be for a very long time. I wish her the best of luck. Kaitlyn will be fine in the future and i hope she understand that. Just take things one day at a time. I also hope that she does not blame six flags for the horrible accident. I work at (six flags new england) and i can speak for my co workers on this as well. We would never want something like this to happen to anyone. We do everything possible to keep or rides safe and fun. Sadly enough accidents do happen, but you my dear will do fine in life. It wont be easy but it will be worth it. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck!
